On a painting trip to the Flint Hills of Kansas in Sept. 2020, I found this old windmill laying next to a weathered outbuilding at the foot of its replacement which was whirring proudly above. I couldn’t resist as the strong light seemed to set everything aglow. I worked quickly as the light and shadows were changing by the minute. Painted en plein air on the Grimm-Schultz Farmstead in Volland KS.
